Matt Smith dominates and Folarin Balogun shows his class as Ian Wright watches Arsenal U23s

Arsenal Under-23s didn't start the New Year perfectly but showed great resolve to ensure they didn't lose to league-leaders Derby County Under-23s at Meadow Park.

2-0 down with 10 minutes to play, Sam Greenwood tapped his first goal at Under-23 level home before Matt Smith's mazey run into the box resulted in his shot bouncing in off a defender via the post.

Coming back to draw the game was vital for Steve Bould's side as they remain just two points off the Rams who top the Premier League 2. Arsenal are currently fourth, also behind Leicester and Chelsea Under-23s.

Below, we take a look back at some of the key moments you may have missed from Meadow Park.

Matt Smith's overall contribution

At full time most would have been praising Matt Smith for his part in the young Gunners' equaliser but the work he put in beforehand should not be overshadowed.

With Robbie Burton absent through suspension, Arsenal needed somebody to step up in midfield and make life hard for Derby's forward thinking players. Stationed at the base of midfield, that's exactly what Smith for the majority of the game.

Playing just in front of the back four, he anticipated danger extremely well and was able to shuttle side to side to challenge for the ball.

Doing such a good job at this, he forced Derby to change their approach in attack. Rather than trying to cut through Arsenal, they resorted to long balls over the top for quicks wins - which they got. Jahmal Hector-Ingram took advantage of the change in approach to score twice.

"Steve (Bould) has also said to me that I need to adapt the defensive side of my game in this new role" Smith told Arsenal's matchday programme ahead of the Manchester United victory.

"In that deep role, you need to be a bit more disciplined. Because of that, I've been working really hard to improve the defensive side of my game this season.

"I feel like getting on the ball is the stronger area of my game, so I want to tidy up defensively. That includes being in the right position, tackling, heading and the way I read the game."

Folarin Balogun's silky footwork

Making his first start since October for the Under-23s, Folarin Balogun didn't look a step out of place at Meadow Park.

Leading the line vs Derby County, he wasn't able to add to the seven Premier League 2 goals he's already bagged this season, but had a strong display nonetheless.

The moment that demonstrated this best didn't come in the final third, however.

Late in the first half, he received the ball under pressure near halfway. With a Derby man on his back, he proceeded to drive his way forward, as the defender nearly poked the ball away, he brought out a perfectly-executed roulette to break free and keep the move flowing.

This was just one of the occasions where his close control left the opposition astonished as he was able to create space where there was none to get shots off. On the night, he had to settle for an assist rather than a goal, however.

Ian Wright's appearance

The Arsenal legend may have recently returned from the I'm A Celebrity Jungle and continued his role analysing Premier League, but that hasn't stopped his love for the club.

Ian Wright was at the Arsenal Under-23s' draw with Derby County and although they didn't score, he would have been impressed by Folarin Balogun and Tyreece John-Jules' performances.

Surprisingly, the club's second highest goal scorer wasn't mobbed for pictures and autographs when he was seen - although there were a few requests. He simply greeted his old teammate Steve Bould and took his place in the stands to watch the game unfold.

Academy manager Per Mertesacker was also in attendance and couldn't hold himself back from reacting emotionally at refereeing decisions and nice pieces of Arsenal play.
