Matt Smith and Olivia Colman will voice this year's BBC Christmas animation

The BBC's Christmas animation will this year be Superworm – voiced by former Doctor Who star Matt Smith and narrated by Oscar-winning Olivia Colman.

The story, by Julia Donaldson and Alex Sheffler, will be the ninth to be turned into a half-hour family film by Magic Light Pictures, who achieved huge success with The Gruffalo back in 2009.

Rob Brydon has voiced a character in every film. His next appearance will be as the Crow, a baddie who helps to kidnap Superworm.

Brydon said that he loves working on the films, adding: “Deciding how to voice characters is such fun. I love watching them on TV at Christmas - a lovely way to round off my year.”

Other cast include Sex Education's Patricia Allison as the worm's rescuer, Butterfly, a loyal friend.

Smith, most recently seen playing Prince Philip in The Crown, said he was “delighted” to be cast as a worm. “What fun to be part of the BBC's Christmas line up in this great children’s tale.”

Mum-of-three Colman agreed: “This is such a lovely project to be involved with. When reading the script, and imagining all those goings on at the end of the garden, I could really get a feel for the pure fun and joy that the film will bring.”

In the story Superwom is super-long and super-strong and always on hand to help out the other animals and insects.

But the wicked Wizard Lizard wants him out of the way and it's down to his friend Butterfly to save him.
