Matt Schnell gets UFC’s second fastest flyweight submission, announces wife’s pregnancy

Matt Schnell lived up to his “Danger” nickname with a quick submission win at UFC on ESPN 5.

Jordan Espinosa thought he’d gotten free of an early guillotine choke attempt, only to find himself stuck in a triangle choke that forced him to tap at the 1:23 mark of the opening round.

Schnell’s submission was the second fastest in UFC flyweight history after Ben Nguyen, who tapped Tim Elliott in just 49 seconds at UFC Fight Night 110. It’s also the first finish by triangle choke in the division’s history in the UFC.

With his third straight win, Schnell (13-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) now is tied for second on the list of consecutive wins at 125 pounds; two-division champ Henry Cejudo leads with four.

“I understand people’s preconceived notions (about the flyweight division), but when you’re talking about it, leave me out of the mix,” Schnell said afterward.

And that wasn’t the only statement Schnell made. He’d promised to keep his wife’s pregnancy a secret, but he couldn’t help himself on the broadcast.

“I broke that promise tonight,” he said. “I’m looking forward to being a dad.”
