Matt Schaub contract: Details on Falcons backup QB’s new 2-year deal

Falcons backup quarterback Matt Schaub signed a two-year contract extension with Atlanta over the weekend. Some financial details of the deal have now been reported. According to Field Yates at ESPN, Schaub’s extension is for two years with $3.78 million and $750,000 guaranteed. There is a team option for 2020.

Schaub has been Matt Ryan’s main backup for the last three seasons. Atlanta clearly values what he brings to the table as an extra set of eyes for its former MVP starter. When the deal with Schaub was announced on Saturday, coach Dan Quinn said as much.

“Matt has a great understanding of our scheme and brings valuable experience to the position.”

This deal is significantly cheaper than the last one Schaub signed, which was worth $9 million over two years including a $2.5 million signing bonus. Ryan hasn’t missed a game in nine seasons, so that’s a lot to pay for someone who’ll be on the sidelines. These figures are much more team-friendly.
