The first look of Matt Damon’s new movie, The Last Duel, has been released, showcasing Hollywood stars in action in Ireland.
Damon and Adam Driver can be seen facing off in the first trailer for the 20th Century Studios’ historical epic from four-time Academy Award-nominated director Ridley Scott.
Directed by The Martian, Black Hawk Down, and Gladiator mastermind, the film also stars Killing Eve star Jodie Comer, and Ben Affleck.
The movie tells a story of betrayal and vengeance with Oscar winner Damon as Jean de Carrouges and Oscar nominee Driver as Jacques Le Gris.
Carrouges was a respected knight known for his bravery and skill on the battlefield, while Le Gris was a Norman squire whose intelligence and eloquence make him one of the most admired nobles in court.
Emmy winner Jodie Comer stars as Marguerite de Carrouges, Jean’s wife, who sets off the movie’s plot after she is viciously assaulted by Le Gris, a charge he denies.
Marguerite refuses to stay silent, and accuses her attacker, an act of bravery and defiance that puts her life in jeopardy.
The star studded blockbuster follows the conflict between the two friends turned bitter rivals who participated in France’s last sanctioned duel.
The Last Duel garnered huge attention in Ireland last year, as the Hollywood flick was partially shot in Cahir Castle, Tipperary, Bective Abbey, County Meath and Cahir Castle, County Tipperary and various locations in Dublin and Wicklow.
Filming in Ireland was abandoned when the pandemic struck, leaving megastar Damon and his family forced to spend several months in the Dublin seaside village of Dalkey.
When filming eventually wrapped, Comer bid an emotional farewell to the cast and crew on the Irish set, saying: “Such mixed emotions....
“Ecstatic to have finished this movie given the circumstances, yet beyond sad to say goodbye to the most wonderful people.”
Like her co-star Damon, who became an honorary Irishman during his stay last year, the Liverpool-born actress was also spotted enjoying a dip in the Irish Sea during her time in Ireland.
Sharing a snap on Killiney Beach, the award winning actress said: “Thanks a mil Ireland.”
Written by Nicole Holofcener, Affleck and Damon, the movie is based on actual events, unraveling the long-held assumptions about what happened between the two men. The project adapts Eric Jager’s book “The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France.”
The movie was originally set to be released in December before the pandemic delayed the Hollywood calendar.
It is now set to open in Irish cinemas on October 15.
