Matt Ryan ranked No. 9 at quarterback going into 2019 NFL season

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is a former MVP and one of the league’s elite passers. Despite being limited by poor pass protection and play-calling, Ryan nearly matched many of his 2016 passing numbers last year.

Doug Farrar at Touchdown Wire has Ryan ranked No. 9 at the sport’s most important position going into 2019. Here’s what he said about Ryan’s impressive 2018 season.

“Last season, Ryan was effective in every way—as a deep thrower, when under pressure, with and without play action, and regardless of how much time he had in the pocket. Of particular interest were his numbers on the move and as plays extended and broke down at times—he threw 15 touchdowns and two picks on plays lasting 2.5 seconds or more, and eight touchdowns to four interceptions when under pressure.”

One could argue that Ryan should be ranked even higher. For what it’s worth, I have Ryan at No. 5 this year just behind Aaron Rodgers. Given the absurd amount of talent at QB these days (especially at the top), it’s hard to complain too much about a top-10 ranking, though.

Ryan had some very strong campaigns under OC Dirk Koetter their first time working together. Both have grown since then and the Falcons also have a lot more talent at the skill positions nowadays, which could mean special things are coming for this potent passing offense.
