Matt Ryan has interesting odds to win the 2019 NFL MVP award

Matt Ryan is one of five former MVP quarterbacks playing in the NFL this season. The others are Cam Newton, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes. According to the Westgate Vegas sportsbook, Ryan’s odds to win the award again in 2019 are 25/1. That ties Ryan for the ninth best odds in the league along with Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Russell Wilson, Philip Rivers, Brady, Drew Brees, Carson Wentz, Andrew Luck, Rodgers and Mahomes all have better odds. Here’s a look at the players who they think have the best chances to take home the award this year.

As we learned last season, there’s only so much that Ryan can do to put himself in the MVP conversation.

Even though many of Ryan’s individual numbers were close to what he did in 2016, Ryan was never at any point considered a serious candidate to win the award. The reason is that team success is still a major determining factor in the MVP voting, fair or not.

That means the most crucial factor for Ryan’s MVP hopes rest on how many games the Falcons win this year. If Ryan continues to play at the same high level and Atlanta gets back to the playoffs despite facing a murderer’s row of opponents in the regular season, he should at least have a legitimate chance.
