Matt Ritchie's amusing role in Newcastle United transfer after calling target 'every day non-stop'

Matt Ritchie called Callum Wilson 'every day' to try and convince his former team-mate to move to Newcastle United last summer.

Ritchie and Wilson spent two years together at Bournemouth and the pair helped fire the Cherries to promotion to the Premier League for the first time in the club's history in 2015.

Ritchie left for Newcastle a year later but remained in contact with Wilson and the 31-year-old was on the case when the striker had the choice between the Magpies and Aston Villa last summer.

Wilson spoke to both Steve Bruce and Dean Smith and assessed Newcastle and Aston Villa's squads before, ultimately, completing a £20m move to St James' Park.

Let's just say that Ritchie, who went on to help the new arrival settle in on Tyneside, was delighted with Wilson's final decision.

"He had been calling me every day non-stop when it was talked about me moving to Newcastle," Wilson told the Super 6 podcast.

"He was calling me every day, 'Cal! Cal! Come up! Come up!' I was like, 'Give me a yard mate! Let me make a decision myself'.

"When someone is calling you, constantly telling you to join the club and telling me how great it is, you kind of do have that set aside and it was probably more of a positive for Newcastle I guess because I've got someone that I know and trust there.

"I also have Tyrone Mings at Villa who I know and obviously asked about coming and that. Honestly, it was a week where I just had to put my phone away and just make a decision based on the pros and cons for myself and make a decision where I felt I fitted the best. Newcastle was my final decision, really."
