Matt Ritchie opens up on Newcastle United's game plan against Chelsea

Matt Ritchie says that Newcastle United played well enough to warrant all three points against Chelsea.

The winger - who played his first Premier League minutes since August - was a key part of the performance as he helped keep Frank Lampard's side at bay.

After absorbing the pressure for most of the game, Newcastle struck deep into stoppage time thanks to Isaac Hayden's effort and left Chelsea with no time to reply.

Ritchie said: "To score late on is really nice.

"I thought we played really well and limited them to not too many chances. We worked hard.

"We know they are a good side with lots of ability, we knew we have to stay compact, shuffle across the pitch and the longer it goes on, it opens up."

It capped a fine week for Ritchie after he played his part in both the FA Cup win over Rochdale and now the league triumph over the Londoners.

He reflected: "I'm really pleased to be back involved.

"It’s a great group and we are doing really well this season."
