Matt Ritchie a doubt for Arsenal clash but Steve Bruce confirms injury is 'not serious'

Matt Ritchie is doubtful for Newcastle United's opening day clash with Arsenal.

The winger picked up a hamstring injury against Hibernian and has been assessed this week by Toon medics but watched on from the stands for the 2-1 win over St Etienne.

As reported by the Chronicle last week , Ritchie's injury is not deemed serious but he could miss the clash with the Gunners.

When asked about Ritchie, Steve Bruce said: "He was more positive before than he is today (re Arsenal)

"We’ll see how he is in eight days’ time.

"We’ve scanned it, we don’t think it’s too serious but it’s going to be a big shout to be ready for next week."

There was also a concern in the second half when Allan Saint-Maximin went down for treatment, but Bruce said: "Saint Maximin turned his ankle - but he’ll be fine."

Bruce looked back on the 2-1 win against the Ligue 1 side and said: "The first half was a typical pre-season friendly where everyone was asleep but second half we played with energy and intensity.

"We could have been worthy winners by a few more.

"Overall I was very, very pleased.

"The second half I enjoyed."
