Matt Rhule: Panthers will reevaluate QB position after minicamp

Following Wednesday’s session of organized team activities, Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule was asked about his comfortability with what the team currently has at the quarterback position. To be fair, no one besides the NFL’s other 31 teams should be comfortable with that particular situation—so he didn’t give much of an answer.

We will, however, find out how he really feels in a week or so.

“I think as we finish minicamp, Scott [Fitterer] and I will talk, really at every position and say, ‘Hey, where are we?'” Rhule said on the possibility of adding a veteran passer. “I think at the end of next week—we sit down, we talk about, ‘Hey, where are we?’ We’ve had a chance to see these guys now for eight weeks, nine weeks. Where do we need to bring some more help in? And where do we need to look for somebody at? Where are we good at? I think those talks happen as you finish up minicamp.”

The team’s mandatory minicamp begins next Tuesday, running from June 14 to June 16. Between now and then, the Panthers will continue to see what they have in both 2022 third-rounder Matt Corral and presumed starter Sam Darnold, who taken a “stoic” approach to the job according to Rhule.

“I think Sam just has to keep working and developing,” he said. “We’ve made the offensive line significantly improved in front of him. He’s learning this offense. He started over really at square one in this offense. I just think he has to just keep stacking days.”

But while those days may be stacking up, they may also be counting down for Darnold in Carolina. Time—for he, Rhule, Corral and even Cam Newton—will tell.
