Matt Patricia showed great coaching with how he handled Jamal Agnew

Jamal Agnew would have been an ex-Lion as of about 4:30 p.m. last Sunday if I had my way. I would have cut the third-year return specialist immediately after the conclusion of the Week 2 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Based on the social media reaction, it would have been a wildly popular move for Detroit GM Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia.

Fumbling away a punt for the second week in a row, coupled with some poor decisions and uninspiring return efforts, Agnew was on the hot seat. He was benched after another instance of ball insecurity (negated by a penalty). The Lions could have popularly justified canning him.

Matt Patricia saw it differently. He believed in Agnew, but also believed in his own ability to salvage the former Pro Bowler. And against the Philadelphia Eagles, Patricia proved he was right.

Agnew ran back Philadelphia’s first kickoff for a touchdown. It wound up being a critical play in a 3-point Lions win.

Patricia gave Agnew a big smile and a warm embrace. The young return man clearly appreciated it, returning the favor with a huge smile and earnest hug.

That’s a side of Matt Patricia his vociferous critics are seeing more often. The players are buying into what coach Patricia is selling…and it is translating directly into victories for the Lions. The players are rallying around one another and around Patricia. That was very evident in the postgame locker room celebration.

Patricia has a better feel in his second year for the more human element of coaching. That obvious change has paid dividends with his team being unbeaten through three weeks.
