Matt Patricia open to trying Tyrell Crosby at right guard

The Detroit Lions currently have a vacancy at right guard with T.J. Lang’s release and subsequent retirement. And while there are a few in-house options including holdover Kenny Wiggins and free agent Oday Aboushi, there is another…

Tyrell Crosby.

I’ve been a staunch advocate for at least trying the second-year lineman at right guard. It seems Lions head coach Matt Patricia is open to the idea, too.

Patricia spoke about Crosby’s potential to move inside, and his future on the whole, during an interview with the media at the coach’s breakfast during the NFL owners meetings in Arizona.

“The game’s a little bit different inside than it is outside for Crosby, so some of those situations we’re going to have to see if he can do that, but we’ll do that with all of those guys,” Patricia said in the interview broadcast on Sirius XM NFL Radio. “There will be a constant flux of positional, I don’t want to call them situations, where we’re just seeing what they can do, but we want to put our guys in as many possible situations that we can.”

That means Crosby should at least get some cursory looks at right guard during the offseason workouts and training camp. Patricia and the Lions eschewed that option during the 2018 fifth-rounder’s rookie campaign, choosing to keep him installed at his familiar tackle position.

It’s a positive to hear Patricia being open to more potential solutions for the biggest problem on the offensive line. Whether it works out or not, it only makes sense to at least try.
