Matt Patricia not ‘drinking from the fire hose’ in his second offseason

In his Tuesday morning appearance on the NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football,” Lions coach Matt Patricia explained the radical difference between this offseason and what he was going through a year ago as a rookie head coach coming off a Super Bowl loss with the Patriots.

Peter Schrager asked the Lions second-year head man about how the 2019 process has changed from the whirlwind that was the 2018 winter and spring for Patricia.

“The first offseason is kind of crazy,” Patricia responded. “For us and where I was at in my previous job, coming off the Super Bowl … we’re kind of thrust into the middle of the offseason program where a lot of teams are already ahead of you.”

“It was full catch-up mode … like drinking from the fire hose, you just try to hang in there as long as you can,” Patricia summarized.

This year is different.

“It’s been great,” the coach quipped. “Had a chance to really settle down and take a look at last season. Trying to figure out areas to improve, overall starting with me as a coach and how I can do better, to the assistant coaches and to the roster. It’s been refreshing from that standpoint.”

Patricia and the Lions resume the offseason with voluntary OTAs next Monday through Wednesday.
