Matt Nagy: ‘We didn’t run the ball enough’ against Packers

The Bears failed to get into any sort of rhythm on offense in Thursday’s 10-3 season-opening loss to the Packers.

The blame starts first and foremost with Matt Nagy, whose play calling was a detriment to the offense. While quarterback Mitch Trubisky did little to inspire confidence that he’s the guy in Chicago, Nagy didn’t help his young signal caller, especially with establishing balance on offense.

Chicago’s 53-to-12 pass-to-run ratio was troublesome, especially during what remained a one-score game throughout the night. While some of those were RPOs, there weren’t enough runs called.

Nagy accepted the blame for the offense’s woes and acknowledged that the Bears didn’t run the ball enough against the Packers.

Rookie running back David Montgomery, who the Bears traded up for, got a measly six carries. Then there’s veteran running back Tarik Cohen, who didn’t get a single carry.

Not finding opportunities to get the ball into the hands of play-makers was an issue for the offense. Abandoning the run in the third quarter trailing a single score was also a concern.

When you have a quarterback that’s struggling, establishing the run game is important in finding balance on offense. The Bears failed to do that. They didn’t try and fail, they just abandoned it all together.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Bears offense heading into Week 2, where they’ll face Vic Fangio’s Denver Broncos. Fangio has seen Trubisky for two years and Nagy’s offense for one, which is definitely cause for concern.

If the offense hopes to rebound, as Allen Robinson believes, then they need to find a rhythm early on against the Broncos next Sunday. That means a more balanced attack all around, including the run game.
