Matt Nagy had high opinion of new Bears CB Buster Skrine in 2018

The Chicago Bears signed a new nickel cornerback Monday, agreeing to terms with Buster Skrine on a three-year, $16.5 million deal.

The decision to sign Skrine means Bryce Callahan’s time in Chicago is over, and if you look back at Matt Nagy’s comments about Skrine from last season, the sentiment around Halas Hall has to be that the team got themselves an upgrade.

“He’s one of the better nickels in this league, if not the best,” Nagy said of Skrine last October. “I mean, he’s good. He’s a good nickel in there.

Skrine is an established veteran of eight seasons in the NFL. His career began in Cleveland, where he emerged as a starter in 2013. He joined the Jets in 2015 and has evolved into one of the NFL’s more respected nickel cornerbacks.

Skrine has started a total of 85 games in his career and has nine interceptions. He’ll be a critical piece to Chicago’s secondary in 2019 and will be evaluated closely considering he’s been hand-picked to replace Callahan in the lineup.
