Matt Nagy: Bears kickers Fry, Pineiro ‘have been even’

With the conclusion of training camp, neither Elliott Fry or Eddy Pineiro have done enough to separate themselves in the ongoing carousel that has become the Bears’ kicker competition.

That makes the preseason even more important as the Bears have to determine if their starter is currently on the roster.

“They have been even,” Nagy said, after Tuesday’s practice.

While both Fry and Pineiro jumped off to a hot start Tuesday, their performances didn’t end well. Both kickers went 6-for-8 on the day.

The Bears are looking at the collective effort of these kickers throughout training camp and preseason. But the fact that neither Fry or Pineiro has separated himself from the other has made it difficult.

Fry has connected on 54-for-67 field goals (81 percent) during practices and went 2-for-2 (including an extra point attempt) during last week’s preseason game against the Panthers.

Pineiro has hit 53-of-64 field goals (83 percent) during practices and went 1-for-2 in that first preseason game against the Panthers.

“It’s rare that kickers make every single kick that they take,” Nagy said. “But there’s a balance to that and you have to understand that the preseason is going to be time for us to really evaluate those kicks, and weight them.”

The test continues Friday when the Bears travel to New York to play the Giants in their second preseason game.
