Chris Blewitt, Elliott Fry and Eddy Piñeiro continued their competition during Wednesday’s organized team activity practice.
The Bears have put skinnier uprights inside their goal posts at practice.
“That’s the Arena League, so we might just keep it that way,” said coach Matt Nagy, an AFL alum. “They’ve got to start putting it through that one instead of the big one.”
Chris Blewitt, Elliott Fry and Eddy Piñeiro continued their competition during Wednesday’s organized team activity practice. Nagy wouldn’t rule out taking all three — plus the goal posts — to training camp.
“We’re trying to let this thing play out,” Nagy said after the team’s organized team activity practice. “That’s a very important position for us right now, so we’re going to be delicate with it and make sure that whatever we do, we talk about it and we decide, ‘OK, is this the best thing to do?’
“If we need to bring three to camp, we’ll bring three to camp.”
Nagy claimed he wasn’t concerned about the position, as “there’s a lot of time ahead of us” before camp starts in mid-July.
Quarterback Mitch Trubisky was asked why fans were so interested in the kicker derby.
“I never know why fans are focused on anything — that’s kinda, you’re just chasing ghosts with that,” he joked. “It can be anything. It could be a Tweet. It could be a play, it could be a kick. It could be a throw. I know for me, a lot of my throws, they’re just going after them.”
Trubisky smiled, and the line drew laughter.
He said talking about kickers has become trendy in Chicago.
“People follow trends — they follow things that are popular and things that are fun to talk about,” he said. “Once we take care of it, it won’t even be a thing. But I guess it’s just a trend right now. Which kinda takes focus off everything else, but we know as a team and as teammates how to kinda block that out and bring everyone back in. …
“That’s not really something we really talk about in the locker room or something we acknowledge. We just go about our business.”
