Matt Moore in for injured Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes

It’s time for the Kansas City Chiefs to test out Andy Reid’s quarterback philosophy.

The Chiefs are in need of their backup quarterback to step up in the place of Patrick Mahomes, who has been ruled out with a knee injury.

Reid explained this offseason that he likes to have one quarterback that’s a younger guy and another quarterback that is a seasoned veteran. It doesn’t matter which one is the starter or backup but that is the dynamic that he likes. That is what prompted the Chiefs to bring Matt Moore out of retirement and into the fold.

Moore got his start as an undrafted free agent in 2007. He was good for the Cowboys in the preseason but he was waived during roster cuts. He ended up with the Carolina Panthers for the first three seasons of his career. He started 13 games, finishing with a 7-6 record as a starter.

From 2011-2016 Moore was a QB for the Miami Dolphins. In 2011 he started 12 games for the Dolphins, leading the team to a 6-6 record on the season. He threw for over 2,500 yards and 19 touchdowns to 6 interceptions on the season. The remainder of his career he operated as a backup QB with Ryan Tannehill being drafted to the Dolphins in 2012.

Moore is capable of working as a game manager for the Chiefs. He’s more of a pocket passer compared to what we’re used to seeing with Patrick Mahomes and even before when Alex Smith was the starter for the Chiefs. He’ll need to rely on his ability to get the ball to his playmakers and their explosion on the field.

The remainder of the Chiefs vs. Broncos matchup will be in Moore’s hands and a good performance could ensure that he remains the starter with Mahomes out for any stretch of time.
