Matt McQuaid signs with the Detroit Pistons

YEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

QUAIDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

After going undrafted in the NBA Draft, former Michigan State wing Matt McQuaid reportedly has signed a free agent deal with the Detroit Pistons.

McQuaid worked out with the Pistons during the pre-draft process.

We are still awaiting word as to the specifics of the deal. After the draft, undrafted prospects can agree to a number of different kinds of deals that mean different things. Some sign on just for NBA Summer League. Some sign as undrafted free agents with the specific NBA team. Some sign two-way deals with NBA teams that set them up with a contract that is moveable between the G-League and NBA, while protecting the player from being poached by other NBA teams.

Either way, at the very least McQuaid will be with the Pistons during the NBA Summer League and will have a very good shot to earn himself a spot in training camp, as well as an affiliate or two-way contract with the Grand Rapids drive. Both types of deals would net him more money than the typical G-League deal and would mean that the Pistons find him valuable enough to protect from other NBA teams signing him.

In the G-League players are often singed with the league and not specific teams, so they are free agents free to sign with any NBA team. That is unless they are on a two-way contract, are signed with the NBA team or are signed as a protected affiliate player. The designations will be important for McQuaid as they all carry with them different levels of income.

Right now let’s just enjoy that Quaido is staying in Michigan and hope he can get his professional career going on a good foot.
