Matt Lucas's Baked Potato song helps fight Covid-19

Comedian Matt Lucas has rewritten his classic Baked Potato Song to help fight the new coronavirus Covid-19.

Millions of people have now watched the Little Britain star's message on his Twitter channel.

The song, originally performed by Matt on Shooting Stars, has been rewritten to include key messages about how to avoid spreading and catching Covid-19.

The new message includes: "If you want to know what is wrong from right you must listen to what potato say 'wash your hands and stay indoors', thank you baked potato."

The clip has been watched three million times on Twitter.

Speaking to Andrew Marr on BBC Matt Lucas said: "The Baked Potato Song was something I did on a show called Shooting Stars 20 years ago and in an idle moment on Tuesday night I rewrote the lyrics and updated them because Baked Potato is always giving good advice and the new advice in the new version of the song is about washing your hands, staying indoors, only going to grocery stores.

"It seems to have got nearly three million views on my Twitter account so far."

Marr described Baked Potato as 'the sensible adult in the room', but admitted the original version of the song had passed him by.

Matt Lucas is also involved in Feed the NHS, a celebrity-backed campaign with restaurant chains such as Leon, Wasabi and Tortilla raising money to send food to NHS staff.

Matt said he could release his song to raise cash for the cause.

Feed the NHS delivered hot meals for free to hospitals. You can find out more here.

Matt Lucas is the next host of Great British Bake Off. He told Andrew Marr he has been perfecting his cooking skills in lockdown by making kosher chicken soup.
