Matt Lucas fiercely defends pal David Walliams in heated row with Piers Morgan

Matt Lucas fiercely stood up for his old pal David Walliams as Piers Morgan targeted him on Twitter .

After noticing Britain's Got Talent judge David had liked a negative tweet about him, Piers lashed out.

He said he found it amusing that David would like a tweet of that nature then be nice to his face.

He also pointed out that BGT ratings were better when he was a judge on the show.

But after seeing Piers call out his old friend, Matt didn't stand by.

After ending his own long-running feud with David, Matt jumped in to give Piers a dressing down.

It all started when Piers shared a screenshot showing that David had liked a tweet criticising him for leaking fake photos of torture in Iraq that "endangered the lives of British soldiers".

Piers said: "Amusing that @davidwalliams regularly ‘likes’ the nastiest tweets about me, yet is such a snivelling toady to my face.

"It’s not my fault @BGT ratings were so much higher when I was in your chair Dave!"

Jumping to his defence, Matt shared the tweet and said: "Purely objectively - 1) He was probably being polite. Some people are.

"2) Boasting about the BGT ratings and popularity when you were briefly on it to someone who has not only transformed the show but is consistently the biggest-selling author in the country didn't work."

As usual, Piers didn't back down.

He said: "Hi Matt, I don’t think it’s ‘polite’ to be friendly to people in person but poisonous behind their back - it’s cowardly.

"As for BGT, I was very proudly on it for the first 4 years when ratings topped 20 million. They’re now half that. Not a boast, just a fact."

And having clearly had enough, Matt, who starred with David on a number of hit shows including Little Britain, simply said: "Go to bed"

The public were left divided by the spat, with some siding with David and Matt and some siding with Piers.

One said: "Grown ups have the ability to be civil to people’s faces even if they don’t like them, Piers. Perhaps you could learn a lesson from him."

Another commented: "Hard to sympathise with you when every word of the tweet David liked is correct."

While one wrote: "Always lovely to see a Children's author using such a vile tone. I don't think my daughter is missing much."

And another told Piers: "Wow.. you’re now finding out who your friends really are.."
