Matt Le Tissier believes Andy Carroll will give Newcastle a huge lift when he returns from injury

Premier League legend Matt Le Tissier believes the return of Andy Carroll will give Newcastle a huge lift.

Carroll rejoined his boyhood club on a free transfer this summer but is still recovering from an ankle injury.

The England international forward is set to return next month and in his absence, Newcastle find themselves in the Premier League relegation zone - despite Sunday's impressive win at Tottenham Hotspur.

And former Southampton hero Le Tissier believes Carroll can provide the lift that will revitalise Newcastle's season.

"He’ll (Bruce) be desperate for Andy Carroll to get somewhere near match fitness, just to have someone there who could possibly lift the crowd," Le Tissier told Sky Sports' Gillette Soccer Saturday.

“An old fan favourite going back there, if he can get him fit and stay fit, he may just be the one player who can make a difference to the atmosphere in the stadium.

“However I agree with Charlie (Nicholas) as it looks like this situation will only be resolved when the owner leaves as there doesn’t seem to be any other way out.”
