Matt LaFleur becomes first Packers coach to start 6-1 in first 7 games

Matt LaFleur has accomplished something in his first seven games that no coach in Green Bay Packers history can match.

In beating the Oakland Raiders on Sunday and improving to 6-1, LaFleur became the first coach in the franchise’s history to win six of his first seven games.

Vince Lombardi started 3-4 in 1959. Mike Holmgren started 2-5 in 1992. Mike McCarthy started 3-4 in 2006. All three eventually went on to win Super Bowls in Green Bay.

LaFleur has sandwiched a pair of three-game winning streaks around a 7-point loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 4.

The Packers haven’t started 6-1 or better since 2015. It’s only the fifth 6-1 or better start from the team since 2000, and the Packers made the playoffs each of the last four times (2015, 2011, 2007, 2002).

LaFleur already became the first coach since Lombardi to win their first three games as Packers coach. He also led the Packers to a 3-0 start against the NFC North for the first time since 2012.

No first-year Packers coach has ever made the playoffs. In fact, the best finish from a first-year coach in Green Bay came from Holmgren, who overcame a 2-5 start to finish 9-7 in 1992.
