Matt Hancock to give Covid update to the House of Commons today

Health Secretary Matt Hancock will make a Commons statement today on the ongoing coronavirus situation.

He is expected to make the announcement at around 3.30pm on Monday afternoon to update MPs on the latest developments in the battle with Covid-19.

It comes as Boris Johnson cancelled his visit to Delhi next week, as the coronavirus crisis worsens in India and concerns grow over a new variant there.

So far, dozens of cases of the Indian variant have been identified in the UK with Danny Altmann, professor of immunology at Imperial College London, warning people could be "caught out".

He told ITV’s Good Morning Britain: "I am concerned about all the variants. Don’t get me wrong, I think our road map is going well and at the moment, in this country, we are doing rather well, enjoying unlocking.

"But out there, there is the Indian variant, the South African, Brazilian etc, and they do pose a threat."

In the latest figures, the Government said a further 10 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Sunday, bringing the UK total to 127,270.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have been 151,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

In the North East, Newcastle has the highest number of cases with 39.0 per 100,000 while South Tyneside has the fewest with an infection rate of 11.3 cases per 100,000.

Sunderland is the only area in the region to see an increase in the number of cases rising from 29.2 per 100,000 to 30.2 per 100,000.

We'll be running a live blog on Matt Hancock's statement bringing you all the latest updates.
