Matt Hancock to give coronavirus vaccine update - what time it is and what he will say

Matt Hancock will lead a press conference from Downing Street this afternoon.

The Health Secretary is expected to give an update on the UK's coronavirus vaccine roll-out after the government published a 47-page Covid-19 vaccine 'delivery plan'.

Mr Hancock will be outlining further plans for the vaccination programme as the government tries to reach an ambitious target of vaccinating nearly 14 million people by mid-February.

The government has pledged to set up 50 mass vaccination centres in England, and to give "at least" 2 million people per week a dose of vaccine by January 31.

People in the first four priority groups - people over 70-years-old, anyone clinically extremely vulnerable, NHS and care frontline staff, and elderly care home residents and their carers - are being offered the vaccine first.

Prime minister Boris Johnson said last week that the government will be providing daily updates on the roll-out from today.

At today's press briefing, Mr Hancock will be joined by medical director for NHS England Professor Stephen Powis.

The press conference is due to start at 5pm.

NHS England chief Sir Simon Stevens today confirmed that 2.5 million vaccine doses had now been administered.

He told MPs there had been “another very significant acceleration in the number of vaccines given last week”.

In the first three weeks around 1.1 million doses were given and “we doubled that this past week”.

“The speed of vaccination has tripled over the last week with another 1.2 million jabs having been given and that means that the total number of jabs for England has now reached 2.3 million.

“For the United Kingdom it’s over 2.5 million.”
