Matt Hancock 'thinks' and is 'hopeful' this lockdown will be final one of Covid-19 crisis

Matt Hancock hopeful that the UK is on the road to Covid-19 recovery but warned Britain to remain cautious as lockdown laws are relaxed in England and Wales.

Up to six people or two households are allowed to meet up outdoors as of March 29, while outdoor sports facilities can reopen too.

The Health Secretary appeared on ITV's This Morning and was asked by host Holly Willoughby if the current lockdown will be the last one.

Holly asked: "Is this it now, are we on the road to recovery?"

"I think so," Matt Hancock replied.

"We've been able to take the steps today, so meeting outside in groups of up to six, or two households. because we knew from the Autumn, when we just had the rule of six, that for big families that caused a problem.

"And then, hopefully in a couple of weeks time on April 12 then we can take the next step."

"Let's take these steps together, safely, and it does mean being cautious still, but we can only do this because people have stuck by the rules, so we've seen those cases coming down, and the vaccine programme."

The roadmap for lifting lockdown will reach its second step on April 12. Indoor retailers can reopen, as can gyms and hairdressers, while pubs and restaurants are set to be allowed to serve outdoors.

Further changes to the lockdown are due in May, with an aim to remove most restrictions by June 21.
