Matt Hancock suggests people should take this vitamin as it's trialed for protection against coronavirus

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said the public 'should consider taking Vitamin D' after trials to test the micro nutrient for protection against coronavirus begin.

In an address to the House of Commons, Hancock was asked by Labour MP Rupa Huq to be a "hero" and back the taking of the 'sunshine vitamin' to help protect against the virus.

The Health Secretary told the house "updated evidence" has shown Vitamin D to have a positive effect to "broader health" and the government will now 'increase public messaging' regarding the taking of the vitamin.

UK residents are often told to take more vitamin D over the winter months as levels dip, with Vitamin D deficiencies more common in older people, in people who are overweight, and in black and Asian people - all of the groups who are at increased risk of becoming very ill with Covid.

In his address to commons on October 15, Hancock said:

"I have asked the scientists to look once again at the impact of vitamin D on resistance to immunity.

"There has been some updated evidence that has come to light in the last few weeks and I want to make sure this is fully taken account.

"We will be increasing the public messaging around vitamin D to make sure the people get the message that vitamin D can help with your broad health.

"There is no downside to taking it and therefore, people should consider that."
