Matt Hancock says summer holidays abroad 'unlikely'

The chances of Scots being able to take a summer holiday abroad this year are 'unlikely', Matt Hancock has warned.

Asked whether "summer was cancelled" on account of the coronavirus crisis on ITV's This Morning show, the health secretary responded: "I think that's likely to be the case.

"It is unlikely that big, lavish international holidays are going to be possible for this summer.

"I just think that's a reality of life."

Under present Foreign and Commonwealth Office guidance, Britons are warned against 'all but essential' international travel, advice that has been in place since March 17.

Hancock's comment comes hot on the heels of Ryanair's earlier announcement they plan to resume 40 per cent of their flights by July.

It's understood bosses want to almost 1,000 flights in the air per day from July 1, with 90 per cent of the airline's pre-coronavirus route network restored.

However Ryanair say their plan is subject to government restrictions on flights and 'effective health measures' at airports.

Furthermore, both crew and passengers will be required to wear face masks or coverings and pass temperature checks prior to flying.

According to the airline, queueing for the toilet will be banned, however "toilet access will be made available to individual passengers upon request".

Refreshments available to buy on board will be limited to pre-packaged items, and sales will be cashless.

Ryanair said all surfaces in its cabins will be disinfected every night with chemicals which are effective for more than 24 hours.

The carrier will require all passengers flying in July and August to complete a form when they check in, stating how long their visit will be and where they are staying.

As it stands, there is only one Ryanair service continuing to run from Glasgow, with flights to and and from Dublin in operation.

It is not clear at this stage which, if any, Glasgow flights will be restored in the coming weeks.

Ryanair chief executive Eddie Wilson said: "It is important for our customers and our people that we return to some normal schedules from 1 July onwards.

"Governments around Europe have implemented a four-month lockdown to limit the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

"After four months, it is time to get Europe flying again so we can reunite friends and families, allow people to return to work and restart Europe's tourism industry, which provides so many millions of jobs."

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has advised against all but essential international travel since March 17, while domestic holidays are not allowed due to the Government's lockdown orders issued six days later.
