Matt Hancock's lockdown-breaching affair an example of Tories’ malaise

Matt Hancock being caught in a lockdown breaching extra-marital kiss with his aide Gina Coladangelo is just the latest in a long list of embarrassments.

The UK Health Secretary has presided over a series of failures which have left the UK with some of the highest corona death rates in the world.

He was slow to recommend taking the UK into lockdown and failed on PPE and hospital equipment.

He has been accused of lining the pockets of Tory donors by dishing out lucrative health contracts without due process.

Even his own boss, PM Boris Johnson, described him as “totally useless”.

Now he has broken his own government’s guidelines on “social distancing” by snogging a colleague in an office corridor.

The Health Secretary broke the rules he helped to draw up.

The phrase “one rule for us, another for them” comes to mind.

Breaching the guidelines and undermining his own advice is bad enough but Hancock is also being accused of cronyism over the appointment of Coladangelo – a close friend from their days at Oxford University.

Hard-earned taxpayer's money is, once again, going into the pockets of his pals.

There is absolutely no question that Hancock should be sacked. But this is not just about one man’s glaring ineptitude.

It is about a whole Tory government rotten to the core with cronyism, self-interest and incompetence.

And the person at the head of this sorry mess is Boris Johnson.

Even if Hancock does go that should not be the end of the affair.
