Matt Hancock's conflict of love interest was too much for him to stay

Boris Johnson thought Matt Hancock was “f****** hopeless” and his wife’s assessment is unlikely to be any better.

The Health Secretary was caught on camera kissing millionaire lobbyist Gina Coladangelo while he should have been beating Covid-19.

The affair was not in itself a resignation matter. But there was more to this scandal which made it impossible for him to survive.

In September he appointed Coladangelo as a £15,000-a-year non-executive director at DHSC.

She is also a director of lobbying firm Luther Pendragon, whose clients have secured multi-million-pound government contracts – Accenture received £2.5 million to help build the NHS Covid-19 app.

It has been reported the company her brother works for also benefited from NHS contracts. It all added up to a massive conflict of love interests.

Labour and the Covid-19 Bereaved Families For Justice group called for Hancock to be sacked yesterday.

The only person who didn’t see that he couldn’t continue in the job appeared to be the Prime Minister.

Hancock’s position had become untenable and he has eventually done the right thing and resigned.
