Matt Hancock rules out summer holidays for Brits this year in controversial This Morning interview

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has 'cancelled summer' as he ruled out international holidays for Brits this year.

The Health Secretary appeared on This Morning to face questions from hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, after angering Piers Morgan hours earlier by not appearing on Good Morning Britain.

Hancock was asked for clarification on everything from seeing parents to children going back to school but it was his comments on people going on holiday that caused a real stir.

On the same day that Ryanair revealed they are looking at resuming flights from July 1, the Health Secretary shut down hopes of jetting off anywhere in the coming months when he said: "We haven't made a final decision on that yet but it is clear that we will seek to reopen hospitality, some hospitality, from early July if we keep successfully reducing the spread of this virus.

"But social distancing of some kind is going to continue.

"The conclusion from that is it is unlikely that big, lavish international holidays are going to possible for this summer.

"I just think that's a reality of life."

One upset viewer reacted to Matt's answer by tweeting: "Looks like it will be sun loungers in the garden this year," and another posted: "More confusion though as what is a big lavish holiday?"

A third reacted: "poor choice of words calling holidays “lavish”. Most people have 2 hard earned weeks abroad which can’t be described as neither “big” nor “lavish”.
