Matt Hancock reportedly giving Covid update today

The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care is expected to give an update on the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic this morning.

Matt Hancock will deliver a written ministerial statement in the House of Commons, reports PA.

It comes amid reports that the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) is to hold an emergency meeting to discuss how the spread of the Indian variant amid fears it could impact the Government’s road map out of lockdown.

However, this morning, Mr Hancock hailed data that showed infection levels in England had continued to fall.

On Twitter, he said: "I'm delighted the latest REACT-1 study shows that coronavirus infections have fallen to 1 in 1000 in England. This shows that we’re making real progress against the virus.

"When you get the call, get the jab."

But Boris Johnson has warned that new variants “pose a potentially lethal danger” and aid there is “increasing concern” in the UK about the variant first identified in India.
