'Matt Hancock keeping job shows how ethically bankrupt Tory government has become'

If Matt Hancock had any honour, he would have resigned as a minister already.

And if Boris Johnson had any moral authority, he would have sacked him.

The fact the Health Secretary remains in place shows how ethically bankrupt this Conservative government has become.

The case against Hancock is clear-cut: the person who set the guidelines for Covid-19 has himself admitted breaking them.

For as long as he remains in place, why should any other person in the country feel obliged to abide by the restrictions?

By standing by his Health Secretary, in the same way he wrongly stood by Dominic Cummings, the Prime Minister is undermining his own Government’s public health messaging.

This Government’s disdain for the public’s wellbeing is matched only by its blatant disregard for standards in public life.

When not handing contracts to cronies or appointing friends to privileged positions, they are bending the rules to suit their own needs.

Ministers are kept on regardless of whether they have breached the ministerial code, are serially incompetent or just plain hypocritical.

This is what happens when the standards for personal conduct are set by a Prime Minister who is devoid of integrity.
