Matt Hancock denies claims he broke 10pm curfew rules in bar

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has denied claims he broke the Government’s Covid-19 10pm drinking curfew.

Speaking about the accusation for the first time on BBC Breakfast, the MP was asked by Dan Walker if he broke the rules set by his own administration.

An eye witness claimed to have seen Hancock drinking in a Commons bar after 10pm, however the minister insists the allegations are untrue.

The accusations come at a highly sensitive time for the Government as a large majority of the hospitality sector has been shut down under tier-three lockdown measures.

BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker quizzed the Health Secretary about rumours on this morning’s BBC Breakfast show.

Dan said: “You’ve mentioned behaviour, I just want to talk about your own behaviour, because this is the first chance we’ve had to speak to you since some of those newspaper rumours of you breaking the 10pm curfew in a bar in parliament. Can I ask you this morning live on the TV, did you do that?”

Hancock was clear and extremely short and sweet in his response. He said: “No, and I’ve said so in the House of Commons, the story is not true and I’m glad to be able to clear that up”

The breakfast presenter came back at him one more time with an eyewitness claim. Walker said: “So the eyewitness who said they saw you there, they’re not telling the truth?”

Once again, Matt Hancock became back with a short reply. He said “No, absolutely not”.

Mr Hancock, who tested positive for coronavirus in March, has previously come under fire for breaking government protocols.

In June, he apologised after he was filmed breaking the two-metre social distancing rules by placing his arm around a fellow MP during Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons.
