Matt Hancock confirms what Stay Local rule means in England

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has confirmed exactly what the new 'Stay Local' rule means as lockdown begins to ease in England.

From today people will no longer be forced to stay at home and can now leave their house for non essential journeys.

But there is some confusion over what stay local means, with the government refusing to put a limit on how many miles you can travel.

Today Mr Hancock appeared on This Morning to speak to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield about the lockdown easing.

The presenting pair asked him what exactly the stay local advice meant and he said: “We’re saying that you should minimise travel, but if you want to travel to see friends and family then that is absolutely fine - no matter where they are in England.

"There’s different rules from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and international travel is difficult and in fact, going on holiday abroad is still not allowed."

Mr Hancock then revealed what he would be doing this Easter, under the new rules.

He said: "So for instance, I haven’t been home to Suffolk since November and I’m planning on going this weekend, but only go for the day because there are no overnight stays permitted.

"I’m going to go for the day on Easter Sunday. I’m going to see friends in Suffolk outdoors and then I’m going to come back again.

"We decided at the start of this latest lockdown, the whole family was going to stick together in London but obviously I want to get home to Suffolk. I can’t wait, I can’t tell you home much I’m looking forward to it.”
