Matt Gay signs restricted free agent tender, will earn $2.54M in 2022

Matt Gay is going to remain the Los Angeles Rams’ kicker for one more season after earning Pro Bowl honors in 2021. The Rams used an original-round tender on Gay this offseason, as he was a restricted free agent.

On Thursday, the Rams announced that Gay has signed the tender, making the deal official. That ties Gay to Los Angeles for another year at $2.54 million, which is the amount of the tender.

It’s not guaranteed, however, so the Rams could cut Gay without paying him anything before the season begins – not that they’re going to do that, of course.

Last season, Gay made 32 of his 34 field goal attempts in the regular season, also drilling 48 of his 49 PATs. In the postseason, he made 8 of 10 field goals and all 11 PATs, at one point making 23 consecutive field goals. That’s the second-longest streak in franchise history.

The Rams signed Gay in 2020, solving their kicking woes after losing Greg Zuerlein in free agency. He replaced Sam Sloman and Kai Forbath, who both struggled in the first half of the 2020 season.

Since joining the Rams, Gay has made 46 of his 50 field goal attempts in the regular season, becoming one of the most accurate kickers in football.
