Matt Dumba's goal in overtime gives Wild win over Senators

OTTAWA _ Matt Dumba's goal with 1:03 left in overtime _ his second of the season _ gave the Wild a 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Sunday at Canadian Tire Centre.

Dumba was criticized by Wild coach Bruce Boudreau on Philadelphia's tying goal in a Wild loss the night before, but he made up for it when he buried the puck past Senators goaltender Craig Anderson.

The victory gave the Wild a second road victory in three games and gave them a 2-2 record in their recent four-game road stretch.

Both teams looked a little lethargic at the start of the game, perhaps because of the afternoon start.

The Wild exacerbated that by taking two quick early penalties.

The action started at the end of the relatively lackluster first period. It began when Mikael Granlund's high-sticking penalty put the Senators on their third power play with 1:36 left in the period.

Just 12 seconds later, Ryan Suter broke out of the Wild zone with the puck, then sent it to Eric Staal coming down the right wing into the Ottawa zone. Staal went high with the backhand. Anderson made the save, but the rebound came to Suter to the left of the goal, and he buried it just 12 seconds into the penalty kill.

It was Suter's fourth goal of the season and the team's second short-handed goal, the first since Granlund did it against Dallas on Oct. 29.

The goal seemed to wake the Wild up, and Minnesota dominated the second period, outshooting the Senators 15-9. Nino Niederreiter got a breakaway off a line change but was stopped by Anderson. Moments later Staal got behind the defenders but couldn't score either.

At the other end Kuemper made some big saves. He stopped Bobby Ryan's shot from the right circle, then made a nice save 12 minutes into the period on a shot from Deon Phaneuf from the point that was tipped in the slot.

After killing off four Senator power plays, the Wild finally got one of its own with 1:55 left in the period. Mikko Koivu appeared to have put the Wild up 2-0, but the goal was waved off because Koivu slapped in a rebound of his own tip with a high stick.

The Senators tied the score at 1 at 5:06 of the third when Kyle Turris took a pass from Chris Neil, skated across the crease to the right circle and beat Kuemper far side. It would have been 2-1 Senators minutes later, but Kuemper robbed Cody Ceci with a diving glove save at 7:06.

Both teams had chances, but neither could convert, forcing overtime.
