Matt Doherty could be closing in on a £12m transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.
As reported by football.london, Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is a fan of the Republic of Ireland international, who can play not only as a right-back but also as a wing-back, right-sided midfielder and as a left-back.
Following Kyle Walker-Peters' permanent move to Southampton as well as Serge Aurier potentially moving on this summer, Mourinho is on the market for reinforcements at right-back.
And with Wolves expected to sign Arsenal's Ainsley Maitland-Niles in a deal worth around £20m, his ability to play at right-back could help Spurs' chances of signing Doherty in a £12m deal.
With that said, the latest update is very promising for Mourinho and Spurs fans.
The two clubs are believed to now be close to an agreement on a deal and football.london understands that Spurs are keen to wrap up the move completely before Doherty meets up with his Republic of Ireland team-mates ahead of their Nations League game in Bulgaria next week.
In addition, the defender has been on holiday in Sardinia and was expected to return to the UK on Thursday afternoon.
Judging by his latest social media post, that is the case.
Via his Instagram stories, Doherty uploaded an image with the caption that reads: "Thank you Sardinia, but it's time to go home.
As revealed by football.London, because Italy is within a UK travel corridor, Doherty does not need for isolate,
As a result, the deal can edge towards its conclusion with a medical for the player within the next 48 hours as well as the usual formalities taken care of.
Doherty's admission regarding his versatility would make him the ideal signing for the north London outfit.
"I played two seasons there for Wolves – one and a half seasons, maybe, it was – so it would be nothing new to me. I know that I’ll be able to adapt to it and if that’s the case, then it shouldn’t really be a problem and I should be able to play just almost as well as I can on the other side," he said last year.
"Positionally, if I’m on the right-hand side you automatically know where you’re meant to be – if you’re meant to be a little bit higher or deeper
"Going to the left everything feels a little bit off. You might be a little too high at times, or a little too close to the centre-back at times. Going forward there is no real issue, it’s more defensively.
"Positionally, it might take a couple of minutes to get used to, but that’s it."
