Matt Doherty sent strong Tottenham warning after red card vs Leeds United

Matt Doherty may find it difficult to get his place back in the Tottenham side following his red card against Leeds United.

That's the verdict of former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who believes the Republic of Ireland international may pay a greater price for his late dismissal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Doherty was given his marching orders as he picked up a second yellow card late on in the 3-0 win on Saturday, with the former Wolverhampton Wanderers full-back now set to serve a one-match ban.

He will sit out the Carabao Cup tie against Brentford as a result after being sent off, but is set to be available to Spurs boss Jose Mourinho for the FA Cup tie against Marine on Saturday and the Premier League clash with Aston Villa next week.

Doherty's absence is likely to mean another opportunity for Serge Aurier, but Robinson reckons that it may not just be for one game.

“It is an unfortunate for Doherty and it could also be a costly one," he told Football Insider.

“Serge Aurier did fantastically well when he came back into the side but his performance against Leicester City, where he was culpable for the goal, gave Doherty his place back in the starting eleven.

“But now Doherty has done the same and while he will only be out for one game he has given Aurier an opportunity to win his shirt back.”

Doherty has played 17 times in all competitions for Spurs so far this season since his summer switch from Wolves.
