Matt Doherty's verdict on VAR disallowed goal during Wolves vs Manchester United

Wolves star Matt Doherty admitted he knew his 'goal' against Manchester United was going to be disallowed by VAR for handball.

The home crowd - and many of Doherty's teammates - thought the Irish international had clinched the winning goal for Wolves against United in the Molineux third round cup tie when he headed home late on.

But Doherty refrained from celebrating too much before referee Paul Tierney, after VAR's intervention, ruled that the Wolves player had handled the ball.

In a game of few chances, it would have sealed a 1-0 win for Woves, but Nuno Espirito Santo's side will meet United once again at Old Trafford in a third round replay after it finished goalless.

"We probably should have won the game, we felt 1-0 would probably have been right," Doherty said after the game.

"We didn't manage to do it in the end, but at least we're still in the hat for the next round.

"I headed it down and it hit my hand," he said on the disallowed goal.

"I know the rules so that's why I knew straight away. So I didn't have a problem with it really."

Wolves boast an excellent recent record versus United and Doherty added that they will be confident of getting another result against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men when the sides meet again.

He added: "I guess when we play against the so-called top six, we know how to play against them and our results against them are positive more often than not.

"We might have even been favourites coming into today's game, so it shows how far we've come.

"I guess [the replay] is not ideal, given the amount of games we have and the size of squad we have. But we'll recover well and whoever goes there will be capable of getting the win. We're not going to complain at playing one more game."
