Matt Doherty reckons Premier League players returning to clubs is a 'no-brainer'

Matt Doherty reckons Premier League players returning to clubs for training is a 'no-brainer'.

The Republic of Ireland and Wolves full-back says that with all the safety measures and COVID-19 testing being implemented in training facilities, there is nowhere safer for players to be.

“Where we’re working is going to be the safest place you can possibly be,” said Doherty, on Jamie Moore’s Ireland: Away From Home podcast.

“The amount of work the staff are doing in terms of disinfecting everything, you’re getting tested twice a week, my girlfriend has been tested and it came back negative.

“Where we are going to be, nobody is going to have the virus. Everybody has got the masks and gloves on, so for us it’s a no-brainer to go back to training.”

Wolverhampton Wanderers have begun small group training sessions this week, as preparations for the Premier League’s long awaited return begin to increase.

“Yesterday was the start of group training, so we had training in fives. So we’ve just been kind of getting back together,” said Doherty.

“Still no contact, but you're back in your training kit, everything feels a little bit normal now. I think it’ll be next week before we’re able to play small sided games, and actually have some contact with each other.”

With the season expected to make a return in the coming months, Doherty spoke of his desire to get back to action, with so much still to play for this season.

“I want to finish (the season) because we have a possible chance at the Champions League,” he said.

“You have to remember that Man City have been banned for now, so fifth place could get you Champions League, we play Chelsea on the final day of the season and we’re still in the Europa League, so there is a lot to play for.”

Doherty explained how his love of the game is motivating him for a return to action.

He added: “It’s our job at the end of the day, it’s what we dreamt of as kids to be able to play professionally in what I think is the best league in the world, so why would we not want to get back out there?”
