Matt Doherty declares his love for Wolves as Ireland star closes in on decade at Molineux

Matt Doherty insists he is having no thoughts of a testimonial at Wolves despite closing in on a memorable decade at the club.

Doherty, 28, joined the midlands club in the summer of 2010 when he was snapped up by Mick McCarthy from Bohemians for just £75,000.

It turned out to be a bargain basement price for the long-serving Dubliner, who has improved year on year.

Doherty clocked up his 250th appearance but it's a desire to return from football's shutdown, rather than the appeal of a testimonial, that is on his mind.

"I think I’d rather go down the local cricket club and play a bit of that to be honest, get a few of the lads down – get Will Norris behind the stumps, he’s terrible,” Doherty dead-panned.

“I don’t know who I’d want to play against (in a testimonial) as I’ve never thought of it.

“It could be Bohemians, where I started, but I don’t think anybody would come.

“Maybe we’ll just leave that to the side and cross that bridge when we come to it.”

Doherty, who was name-checked by new Ireland boss Stephen Kenny last week in his first media interviews in his new role last week, is proud to have lasted at Wolves having played under eight different managers.

When he joined the club was in the Premier League but fell to the Championship and then League One before climbing back to the top flight - and, this season, to within touching distances of the Champions League.

"I’ve been at Wolves my whole life, really, survived everything that’s gone on for nine and a half years," Doherty told the Express and Star.

“Obviously I’m proud of that, it gives me a great sense of achievement.

“I’m doing something right if all these managers are coming in and I’m still a part of the squad, and not only part of it but playing the majority of the games.

“That fills me with pride. I love being with Wolves. It’s all I’ve known, and I want to get back out there as soon as I can, wearing the jersey at Molineux”.
