Matt Doherty can replicate his Wolves role at Tottenham thanks to Jose Mourinho's tactical tweak

Matt Doherty's potential move to Tottenham has left many fans wondering where exactly he will fit into Jose Mourinho's side.

With Spurs already clinching deals for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joe Hart over the past two weeks as they prepare for their Premier League opener against Everton, the head coach is now intent on luring the Wolves ace to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Right-back has been a bit of an issue for the Lilywhites over the past 12 months and Mourinho has looked close to home to try and address the problem.

Amid previous links with Norwich City’s Max Aarons, Lille’s Zeki Celik and Atalanta’s Timothy Castagne, the 28-year-old, if a move does indeed go through, would be able to go straight into the side and hit the ground running due to his Premier League experience.

Doherty has been a key part of Wolves' rise over the past few seasons and can often be found having a big influence in the final third with his marauding runs down the right flank.

As good as Serge Aurier's numbers have been after registering two goals and eight assists last term, Doherty has the ability to not only match the Ivorian's stats but also better them.

Operating as a wing-back for Wolves due to Nuno Espirito Santo's decision to play with a back three, the ex-Hibernian loanee has 15 goals and 15 assists in all competitions since his side's promotion to the top flight back in 2018.

Having licence to get forward as often as possible for Wolves due to his wing-back role, a number of Spurs fans have questioned if Mourinho will have to change his formation to fit Doherty in.

Well, although Tottenham could play that way as Ryan Sessegnon can operate as a wing-back on the opposite flank, the highly-rated player will still have plenty of chances to push on if he signs on the dotted line in the capital.

A flat back four is Mourinho's favoured way of lining up in defence but Aurier is more of a right wing-back than a right-back in his system due to a specific tactic the head coach uses.

Given the ex-Paris Saint-Germain man isn't exactly the most reliable when it comes to defending due to his knack of switching off at crucial times, Mourinho ensures that the player doesn't have to focus too much on the defensive side of his game as he is better utilised in attacking areas.

He does this by getting Ben Davies to move across from his left-back role to form a three-man defence when Aurier bombs on down the right.

Mourinho brought this tactic in during his first game in charge of the club in the 3-2 win over West Ham in November, with Aurier creating the team's third goal with an excellent cross for Harry Kane to head home.

The right-back did manage to add a further five assists, as well as two goals against Olympiacos and Wolves, to his name following the appointment of Mourinho.

The experienced boss will again operate this way if a transfer for Doherty can be finalised and it will basically see him repeat his role at Wolves that he has thrived in over the past few seasons.

While on the teamsheet the Irishman may be down to play at right-back, expect him to operate a lot further forward as he has the attributes to make a big difference for Tottenham in the final third.
