Matt Doherty and Enda Stevens ruled out of Ireland's clash with Qatar

Matt Doherty and Enda Stevens have been ruled out of Ireland’s friendly against Qatar in Hungary tomorrow.

Tottenham wing-back Doherty shipped an injury in the early stages of Saturday’s damaging home World Cup defeat to minnows Luxembourg.

He tried to play on but was forced off at half-time and Burnley winger Robbie Brady replaced him.

Sheffield United defender Stevens played the entire game, finishing up as one of three centre-backs having started at left wing-back.

But he is also out of the Qatar game after picking up a knock and did not travel to Debrecen with the squad yesterday evening.

Ireland boss Stephen Kenny - who retains the backing of the FAI after Saturday's shambles - was already without key men.

Brighton striker Aaron Connolly missed the Luxembourg game with a foot injury and was already ruled out of the Qatar clash.

And key men like Darren Randolph, John Egan, James McCarthy and also Caoimhin Kelleher will have missed all three games in this window.

Qatar were added to Ireland’s World Cup qualifying group so they could prepare for the 2022 finals which they host.

But the games against them - tomorrow and when they face Ireland in Dublin in October - do not have any points at stake or count in the qualification race.
