Matt Costello signs deal with Spanish basketball team Gran Canaria

After putting up an impressive performance at Summer League, Matt Costello has agreed to a deal to play basketball in Spain for Herbalife Gran Canaria, according to Chema de Lucas. Costello played in Europe last year as well for Italian team Sidigas Avellino. He averaged 10.8 points and 7.5 rebounds-per-game in the Italian Serie A and Basketball Champions League.

This might be disappointing for some fans hoping to see him play in the United States this year, but this is definitely the smart move for Costello. He will almost certainly be making more money in Europe than in the G-League, and if he took this deal it would lead us to believe he did not have many suitors in the NBA this season. Even if he did have interest by teams in a two-way capacity, it’s likely he will still be making more in Italy, so can’t fault Matt for taking that deal whatsoever.

I expect to see Costello back at Summer League next year to continue trying to find a home in the NBA.
