Matt Costello played basketball in Italy last year. Before that, it was the G-League (he did have one two-way contract for the San Antonio Spurs. Costello continues his basketball journey, scratching and clawing his way to try to get a legit shot at the NBA. He has an opportunity over the next two weeks with the Detroit Pistons at the NBA’s Summer League.

Matt Costello joined fellow Spartan on the Pistons this summer, and, he actually was given a better opportunity thus far to show what he can do. McQuaid only played in garbage time, whereas Costello actually started for the Pistons.
Costello had a great game for the Pistons by almost every metric. Sure, he fumbled a pass here or there, but he gave what he is always able to give to a team: high-energy defense, competent, smart offense, decent rim-protection and an innate ability to attack the basket and finish at the rim.
Costello finished with 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists. He actually led the Pistons in plus-minus with a startling +28. This was a very impressive outing from Matt. The Pistons are in need of another center on the roster. I think most are expecting them to go with a veteran, but I would not be mad at Costello getting a real chance there.
For Costello, this is a game he’ll play for the rest of his life, no matter what:
“I tell my family that I would get a job, but I’m always going to be around basketball. I don’t care if I’m done playing. I’ll go play at the Y or four church leagues — I just love playing basketball.”
