Matt Baker fights back tears as he announces he is leaving The One Show after nine years

Matt Baker has announced he is leaving The One Show after nine years presenting the programme.

Baker, who will step down in spring 2020, fought back tears as he revealed the news on Wednesday's (4 December) episode of the BBC1 series.

The presenter said that while he was excited about new career opportunities, “most of all I'm looking forward to having dinner with my family and being able to put my kids to bed".

Sitting alongside one of his co-hosts Angelica Bell, Baker said: "At this time of year, I like to take stock and reflect. The One Show has been a massive part of my life for almost a decade now and I have loved every second of being a part of it. But I am going to be leaving this green sofa in the spring.”

He told One Show viewers: "All that support you show us, you will never really understand how much that means to me… "I'm going to miss you all and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart."

Baker will continue to present Countryfile and BBC sports coverage. His One Show replacement will be announced in due course.

The former Blue Peter presenter joined The One Show in February 2011, replacing comedian Jason Manford.
