Matildas' winning run comes to an end thanks to ludicrous penalty decision

The Matildas have a right to feel hard done by after a controversial penalty decision.

A 0-0 draw against Portugal in the Algarve Cup is by no means a bad result, but the Matildas will be nonetheless disappointed their unprecedented winning streak has come to an end at eight games.

The Matildas will feel especially bitter considering they were robbed of a clear penalty kick by a bizarre refereeing decision in the opening 10 minutes.

Chloe Logarzo was chopped down ruthlessly by Ana Borges about half a metre inside the penalty area but the referee somehow came to the conclusion the foul occurred outside the box.

Emily van Egmond nearly converted the chance anyway, curling her shot in from the free kick and forcing a good save from the Portuguese goalkeeper.

The Matildas were marginally the better side over the 90 minutes, in a game which saw Claire Polkinghorne claim her 100th cap, but neither team could break through despite clear chances at both ends.

Star strikers Lisa De Vanna and Sam Kerr both started on the bench but neither could convert their opportunities when they did come on, meaning Kerr's scoring streak for the Matildas also came to an end at seven games.

The draw comes after a dramatic 4-3 win over Norway in the Matildas' opening game, and they are still well placed to make the competition's final. A win over China on Tuesday (AEDT) should see them reach the decider.
