Five months out from the FIFA Women's World Cup, the Matildas may face the prospect of a coaching change with Football Federation Australia (FFA) set to make a significant announcement on Saturday.
The FFA has scheduled a press conference for the morning and the ABC has been told the future of Matildas head coach Alen Stajcic and his support staff is on the line.
Rumours have been circling for days of disharmony between some of the players and the coaching staff.
Stajcic said he would not comment until after a press conference from the FFA, as did Australian football boss David Gallop.
"I cannot make any comment other than I can confirm that we are in the process of looking at all aspects of the Matildas preparation in this critical period as we look towards the great opportunity and challenge of being a genuine contender to win the Women's World Cup," the FFA chief executive told the ABC.
A number of internal reports have recently been tabled reviewing the culture of the FFA, its staff and teams.
Stajcic became Matildas coach in 2014 after replacing Hesterine de Reus, who was sacked after falling foul of senior players.
She was replaced by Stajcic, who has overseen thrilling runs to the quarter-finals of the 2015 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, as well as a rise to a record fourth in the FIFA rankings.
The team is currently ranked sixth in the world, with hopes it will make a significant impact at the World Cup, to kick off in France on June 7.
